About Mothi Desai Village Park
Located in Dombivli East on the outskirts of Mumbai, Mothi Desai Village Park is a modest yet ecologically valuable green space nestled within a rapidly urbanizing landscape. Spread across open grounds interspersed with native trees, scrub patches, and nearby wetland or mangrove-influenced areas, the park serves as an important breathing space for both people and wildlife. The habitat is a blend of semi-urban woodland, grassland edges, and seasonal waterlogged patches, supporting plant species such as neem, peepal, banyan, acacia, and ornamental shrubs. Its proximity to creeks and mangrove ecosystems enhances its ecological significance, creating microhabitats that attract diverse fauna.
For birdwatchers, the park offers surprising diversity despite its small size. Common urban species like mynas, bulbuls, drongos, and parakeets are regular residents, while egrets, herons, and kingfishers may be spotted near wetter zones. Seasonal migrants such as warblers and flycatchers add excitement during winter months, and raptors like kites often soar overhead. Butterflies, dragonflies, small reptiles, and squirrels further enrich the biodiversity. However, increasing urban development, habitat fragmentation, waste dumping, noise pollution, and pressure on nearby mangroves pose serious challenges. Sustained conservation awareness, community engagement, and protection of adjoining wetland habitats are essential to ensure that Mothi Desai Village Park continues to thrive as a vital urban green refuge within Mumbai’s ever-growing skyline.

Common birds of Mothi Desai Village Park
Mothi Desai Village Park (Padle) has steadily revealed itself as a surprising birding hotspot, hosting an impressive mix of wetland specialists, woodland songbirds, and seasonal migrants. Large gatherings of Indian Spot-Billed Ducks and Asian Openbills highlight the importance of its water bodies, while flocks of Black-Headed and Brown-Headed Gulls bring a coastal touch to this suburban landscape during winter. Red-Wattled Lapwings patrol open grounds in good numbers, and species like Common Sandpiper, Eurasian Moorhen, Little Grebe, and Gray-Headed Swamphen add life to the marshy edges. The presence of Glossy Ibis further reflects the ecological value of the wet patches within the park.
Equally exciting is the diversity of woodland and migratory birds. Indian Gray Hornbills, White-Browed Bulbuls, Common Ioras, and Asian Tits enliven the treetops, while winter visitors such as Hume’s Warbler, Green Warbler, and Taiga Flycatcher bring seasonal charm. Cuckoos — including Pied Cuckoo, Indian Cuckoo, Gray-Bellied Cuckoo, and Fork-Tailed Drongo-Cuckoo, showcase the park’s varied habitat structure. Adding flashes of color are the Indian Roller and the vibrant Vigors’s Sunbird. Together, these sightings demonstrate how even a semi-urban green space can support remarkable biodiversity, making Mothi Desai Village Park a rewarding destination for birders throughout the year.
