About Vilangan Hills
Rising gently above the cityscape of Thrissur, Vilangan Hills is a scenic laterite hillock that offers a refreshing blend of open landscapes and green cover. Often called the “Oxygen Jar” of the city, the hill features grassy slopes, patches of planted trees, and shrub-dominated habitats that support a surprising diversity of life. Seasonal flowering plants attract butterflies and insects, while the mix of open viewpoints and vegetated patches creates ideal conditions for birds, small mammals, and reptiles to thrive. The panoramic views from the top, especially during sunrise and sunset, add to the charm of this easily accessible urban nature space.
For birders, Vilangan Hills provides a rewarding mix of open-country and edge-habitat species, making it a great spot for both beginners and enthusiasts. Early mornings are filled with bird calls as drongos, bulbuls, sunbirds, and raptors become active across the landscape. However, being close to an urban center, the hill faces growing pressures from tourism, littering, habitat disturbance, and the spread of invasive plants. Protecting and managing such spaces responsibly is essential to maintain their ecological value, ensuring that Vilangan Hills continues to serve as a peaceful retreat for people and a vital refuge for biodiversity within the city.
